What Most Contractors Get Wrong About Retaining Walls

HARDSCAPES

Retaining walls don’t fail because of block quality.
They fail because of drainage and base prep.

Common mistakes:

  • No proper footing

  • No gravel backfill

  • No water escape path

  • Poor compaction behind wall

Water pressure is what pushes walls over.

A retaining wall is structural work. It isn’t landscaping.

Before installing one, ask:

  • What’s the drainage plan?

  • What’s the base depth?

  • How is water being redirected?

If you want it to last 10+ years, build it correctly the first time.
